Torun was founded in 1233. It is famous for its beautifully preserved Gothic old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its tradition of gingerbread making.
Nicolaus Copernicus, who was the first to describe the heliocentric system of planets, was born in Torun. But that's not all, people associated with Torun include Samuel Thomas von Sömmering - inventor of the electrochemical telegraph, Prof. Aleksander Wolszczan (UMK) - co-discoverer of extrasolar planets, Prof. Maciej Wojtkowski (UMK) - under his supervision the world's first optical tomograph SOCT was built.
The old town of Torun is surrounded by parks. The beautiful City Park is accessible on foot from the old town. It is also worth seeing the 32m radio telescope of the Nicolaus Copernicus University (UMK) in Piwnice near Torun.
